A New Undertown Review

A review like this makes all the struggle of being a writer worthwhile. From Tokyopop.com comes this fan review:

Undertown is an amazing book. And I didn't even know about it until recently! I was reading the comics in the newspaper because I particularly enjoyed the tokyopop manga section. Then, as usual, the manga changed, and it happened to be Undertown. Now, it didn't catch my attention quite at first, but by the second or third time it appeared I was interested. So as I was heading to Borders, I thought I'd check it out, even though I planned on buying another novel. It wasn't there, and I didn't have much money for anything else, so I left, but the next time I went, I bought Undertown. Up until this point, I was interested by undertown, but not extremely excited...Well that changed. When I finished reading Undertown, I was thrilled by it and I'm proud to say that it is one of my favorite manga now.

What makes Undertown so great is not only the artwork and appealing cover, but also the story. I think it is a very exciting plot line, and no part is too slow. The characters are also very well developed and you don't figure everything out in the first book, that is some things are still left unsolved, and that makes me even more excited for the second book! My favorite character is Sama, because he is not your average hero. He is an ordianry boy thrown into difficult situations and has room to develop further in the future books of Undertown. Overall, if it weren't for that newspaper, I'd be missing out on something truly special.

Publishers Weekly Review!

From Fiction Reviews: Week of 7/23/2007:

Undertown
Jim Pascoe and Jake Myler. Tokyopop, $9.99 paper (192p)
ISBN 978-1-42780-103-6

This fantasy manga presents the right mix of familiar tropes along with new ideas that should capture the imaginations of more than a few readers. Pascoe's story stars young Sama, a boy whose father is in the hospital following a heart attack. Sama wants to mend his father's health, but feels powerless in the face of the situation. A strange old man tells him of Undertown, a magical place that holds, among other things, the Sugar Stone, a magical object that could help Sama's father. After transporting to Undertown, Sama is thrown right into the middle of a land at war. Insects and "Furmen," such as the anthropomorphic rabbit and hedgehog Sama befriends, vie for control of the Sugar Stone. Undertown's real strength lies in how all these concepts are introduced with a breakneck pace and with grand strokes. Myler's art makes sure that this is a book with plenty of action and characters in dramatic poses. The situations sometimes overwhelm the art but most of the time all the figures and their adventures are rendered in a very readable style.

Hellboy Reviews

I'm working on a whole mess of new posts ... but I am totally buried under as usual. First up is the first round of reviews of my latest book, Hellboy Animated: The Black Wedding.

Super nice words from Randy Lander's Graphic Novel a Day:
Wow. I haven't watched the animated Hellboy stored on my Tivo yet, but I'm going to get to it soon, if the strength of this new digest from Dark Horse is an indication of what to expect ... The main feature, "Black Wedding," is a beautifully illustrated story that features all the BPRD and Hellboy and is clever, funny and true to the spirit of the BPRD/Hellboy series but with a style that marks it as different.

from popsyndicate:
Writer Jim Pascoe structures his story like a Mignola Hellboy story. With an intriguing plot, Pascoe builds it up...

from Fist Full of Comics and Games:
My 10-year godson eagerly tore through the book and wanted another after finishing it. As an adult reader, I can say I felt the same.

from Broken Frontier:
Writer Jim Pascoe slips easily into Mike Mignola's formula of mixing horror with humor.

Neil Gaiman may have once called me Phil, but really, can that compare to Rack Raids calling me Ted? (Seriously? Ted?):
Writers Ted Pascoe and Tad Stones ... keep the action brisk and the monsters coming.

and an interview with the amazing artist Rick Lacy:
"Jim's a character! He's great," Lacy stated. "I hadn't known Jim before the books so I didn't know what to expect, but I'm glad I know him now. He's very innovative and has a real love for the industry and crafting comics."

Thanks, Rick ... and thanks to everyone who bought a copy. If you haven't ... get out and grab one before it's too late!
