Monday, March 30, 2009Undertown Book 2
First of all a big thank you to all of the Undertown fans for your patience. Obviously, book 2 did not come out in November of 2008 as originally planned. There are a number of reasons, but the good news is that the book is 100% complete. I have a finished drawn and lettered version, and I have to say I'm very proud. Jake's art is incredible. And I like the think the story is much better than book 1.
Meanwhile, I'm hard at work on finishing book 3, which may require and even LONGER wait. Please trust me when I say I am doing EVERYTHING I can to make sure that YOU get these books -- this means a LOT to me. If you want to know what you can do to help, please write to Tokyopop and tell them you want more UNDERTOWN. Even better ... please spread the word to your friends. Buy an extra copy and give it to someone you like. Ask your local bookstore to order more copies. If your newspaper doesn't have Undertown in the Sunday comics section, write them and tell them to add it (it's available from Universal Press Syndicate). The more we continue to sell, the sooner you will see all three books. Apparently, Amazon has put up a notification page for book 2. Please sign up to show your support -- it's not a preorder, so it doesn't cost ANYTHING. love, jpp Labels: comics, manga, Tokyopop, Undertown Friday, June 06, 2008Undertown Book 1: The Script
Given my interest in discussing the process of writing (see my Writers Tips posts on this site), I thought it would be interesting to share the complete script for my recent manga book, UNDERTOWN. So I'm serializing it on Tokyopop.com -- a new page every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, along with "creator commentary" that either explains some of my crazy ways or offers some kind of behind-the-scenes insight.
Today is the end of week one, so there are already three pages up. Because I have over 1400 members of my online fan club, The Undertown Explorers, and because many of them are aspiring manga writers, I'm hoping that we can start a discussion not just about Undertown the story, but about the nuts and bolts of writing comics. Also of interest is the fact that this is the "shooting script," which is to say that it's the version that Jake Myler used to draw the book. After the whole thing was written and the book was drawn in pencil, I went back and polished all of the dialog. So adventurous writers-in-training can compare this version with what was published and try to figure out why I made the changes I did. The script serialization located here. I hope you get something out of this peek behind the curtain. Labels: comics, manga, script, Tokyopop, Undertown, writers' tips Sunday, March 30, 2008Manga Master
Rock on, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette!
Today the above-mentioned Pittsburgh newspaper published an article on me and my book UNDERTOWN. And when I saw the title in print, I was humbled and awed: "Comics Writer a Manga Master." To be fair, as proud as I am with the success of Undertown, I feel like I'm still a ways off from joining the true manga masters like Otomo, Toriyama, and the mighty Tezuka. But nice articles like this make me feel that I'm at least on the right path... Labels: interview, manga, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tokyopop, Undertown Tuesday, March 11, 2008More Undertown Press
The Undertown PR machine marches on! Check out the rather in-depth interview over at Comic Book Resources.

A lot of folks wrote up the news about Undertown getting syndicated in the Sunday comics, but Katherine Dacey's article on PopCultureShock is the most thoroughly researched and well written.
There's a lot of insight about the newspaper deal from Tokyopop's Jeremy Ross, and some interesting bits from my beloved editor Paul "all the girls love me" Morrissey. Labels: manga, newspaper strip, Paul Morrissey, Tokyopop, Undertown
