While I'm not in the music industry -- thank God -- everyone who knows me knows that I love music and knows that I like to make music in my copious spare time (ha). I've had a lot of discussion with good friends about the state of the industry, specifically the new reality of "stealing music," online downloads, ipod culture, and the like.
I've often told friends that my modus operandi with regards to downloaded music is that I download a LOT of stuff, and the stuff that I really love I tend to buy on vinyl. Almost all of my recent purchases -- recent meaning in the last several years! -- would not have been purchased if I had not found these bands through my wonderful social network I've developed online. Bands like Rosetta, Alva Nota, Current 93, William Basinski, Girl Talk, Mount Eerie, Sonic Dragolgo, Thanksgiving, Nadja, and my favorite new band Mono (whose instrumental "The Kidnapper Bell" inspired a certain short story) are all bands who've made music that I've bought that I would NEVER have bought had I not heard of them through friends online. I could go on and on. I might mention that I've been a subscriber to emusic.com almost since that site started, spending hundreds of dollars on music because I believe this to be a price that is worth my experimenting on something that I don't know if I'll like or not. Yes, I could go on and on, but I'd rather link to the single most amazing article on the state of the music industry that I've read. Written by Rob, this post sums up just about every thought I've had plus some. It explains why it's over, really over.
