Chicken Poetry

Yes, I laughed out loud. And no, it didn't have anything to do with the fact that it's after 2am and I'm high on Macallan.

In-N-Out Genius

As a writer and an editor, I always look at other people's writing very critically. Even though I live with a wonderful writer who was graduated from Columbia's J-school, I find that a lot of contemporary journalism turns my stomach.

Which really means that when I find something so well written that it makes me want to cheer, well, I also want to share it.

Enter Joe Christiano's absolutely brilliant essay on the current state of affairs of the In-N-Out burger chain. When I finished it this morning (the article, not the burger), I said to my wife: "That was heroic writing."

So check it out for yourself, and let me know what you think.

100 Best First Lines

I can't believe it's been more than a month since my last update here. Lots of things going on, and I wanted to fill everyone in with my first post back, but then I got hit with some illness (which is what happens when you refuse to sleep).

So instead, to keep everyone occupied, here is a link to some goofball publication called American Book Review's list of the "100 Best First Lines from Novels."

For the record, my personal number one is their number three. And while I'm glad to see J.G. Ballard on the list, I'm not sure that Crash has his best opening line. And I find it hard to accept a list of ONE FRIGGIN HUNDRED lines that does not include -- in the top ten, let alone the whole damn list -- the opening to Kafka's "Metamorphosis." Idiots.
