Friday, February 03, 2006100 Best First Lines
I can't believe it's been more than a month since my last update here. Lots of things going on, and I wanted to fill everyone in with my first post back, but then I got hit with some illness (which is what happens when you refuse to sleep).
So instead, to keep everyone occupied, here is a link to some goofball publication called American Book Review's list of the "100 Best First Lines from Novels." For the record, my personal number one is their number three. And while I'm glad to see J.G. Ballard on the list, I'm not sure that Crash has his best opening line. And I find it hard to accept a list of ONE FRIGGIN HUNDRED lines that does not include -- in the top ten, let alone the whole damn list -- the opening to Kafka's "Metamorphosis." Idiots.

I still can't figure out how they ignored "When the phone rang Parker was in the garage, killing a man."
Metamorphosis isn't a novel, is it? I thought it was a short story.
JD wins the prize! Wow, I can't believe I remembered to put "Metamorphosis" in quote (deep down I must know it's a short story) but totally spaced the fact that this list was all novels.
Damn, that's what I get for not posting in a month -- my shit's sloppy.
I can't believe they missed this classic:
"I turned the Chrysler onto the Florida Turnpike with Rollo Kramer's headless body in the trunk, and all the time I'm thinking I should've put some plastic down."
-Gun Monkeys
"The guy was dead as hell."
-Vengeance Is Mine, by Mickey Spillane
