Cornell

I just got this call on my cell -- from a 310 number -- so I'm thinking it's my man Ross Richie, for whom I'm doing some comic book work (and okay, I'm a little behind). Funny, I think. I'm in the middle of writing Ross an email this very minute.

I answer the phone.

"Are you ready?" the voice says.

"Hey, man." This is my way of playing it safe. Let the caller come to me.

"Are you ready?"

"Yeah, I'm ready." I actually haven't hit send on my email yet -- and I can't tell if it is or isn't Ross -- but I figure I'm as ready as I'm going to be.

"No. Are you READY?" he says again.

"You better believe it!" Now I'm getting into this. Who the hell would question my readiness? God damn right I'm ready. It's not even 11pm. It's like mid-afternoon for me. Bring it on!

"Ahh," the caller wavers, "Cornell?"

Does this guy think I'm Cornell Woolrich? Is this some pulp fiction twilight zone where I'll be called to drink whiskey in a hotel room banging out short stories at cents on the word? This is getting good.

"Yeah. It's Cornell. I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready! How many time I got to tell you, bitch! I. AM. READY."

The guy backpedals, realizing sadly that I am not Cornell. Not tonight.

He apologizes. But what for? Is HE not ready? Just what are he and Cornell up to?
