Comic-Con Just got confirmation that the UglyTown booth number for this year's Comic-Con International Festival in San Diego is 1709. Tom and I will be there ... and we'll be sharing the space with the wonderfully creative folks at Exhibit A Press, publishers of Batton Lash's Supernatural Law. Look closely at Batton's slick and funny comic book and you'll notice that one of his characters -- Toby Bascoe -- bears a certain resemblance to a certain Jim Pascoe. Coincidence?

New Manuscripts Just finished reading what will probably be the two new UglyTown books for the first part of 2004 ... even though Tom and I picked them out of the pile over a year ago! And on a more timely front, the layout for our first hardcover book -- Sean Doolittle's BURN -- is almost done. It's going to be a busy UglyTown week!

Jeopardy Curt Colbert and I had a wonderful conversation when he was in L.A. this weekend about the nature of jeopardy in noir fiction. It's something I've been thinking about ever since the Noir Film Festival that my pal Eddie Muller did at the American Cinematheque. Of all the tropes of mystery/noir/crime fiction, I feel the most important is that the protagonist be in a real state of jeopardy; the more danger the better. Can't this apply to all fiction?

If the early bird gets the worm, wouldn't the worm have been better off sleeping in?

Curt Colbert in da House Hosting my man, and fellow UglyTown author, Curt Colbert this weekend as he flys into L.A. for a booksigning at the Mysterious Bookstore on Sunday at 1:00. Check it out if you're in town, and if you can't make it ... there's still no better time to buy his new book Sayonaraville than right now! Word.

The Eye Just got back from seeing the Pang Brothers' new horror movie "The Eye." I think it's really interesting that so many good horror movies are coming from overseas. What's more interesting to me is how the PLOT was completely overwhelmed by the CONCEPT. I have found a trend in contemporary movies of CHARACTER over PLOT. I see it time and again -- a movie with rich, believable characters that does not have a soul. "Adaptation." "The Hours." "Chicago." Well made, but something's missing. For me as an artist, I'm trying to find, and quantify even, that "something" that turns a work into something great. As for the recent run of Asian horror movies, it's often the ending that brings it home. Does THE EYE do that at the end? Well, I'm not so sure. But the first half is definitely recommended, so go judge for yo'self.

Welcome to JimPascoe.com For far too long I've talked about putting together a Web site. Well, here it is. A couple things are still in the works. Hopefully, they'll be coming fast and furious. Now, I got to get back to work...
