Jeopardy Curt Colbert and I had a wonderful conversation when he was in L.A. this weekend about the nature of jeopardy in noir fiction. It's something I've been thinking about ever since the Noir Film Festival that my pal Eddie Muller did at the American Cinematheque. Of all the tropes of mystery/noir/crime fiction, I feel the most important is that the protagonist be in a real state of jeopardy; the more danger the better. Can't this apply to all fiction?
